Under Construction

For most of Chuck’s life his day started at 4:15am with cleaning barn and milking the cows.  The chores depended on the time of year, but always included two milkings per day.  Remembering that cows don’t take the weekends off, neither does he.  Now that he is “retired”, he sleeps in until 5:30 or 6:00 am before heading down to the barns to feed and take good care of the young girls.  If you ask him, though, he never worked a day in his life.

For the last 76 years, the Ames Farm has been the home of my hero, Uncle Chuck.  Chuck is actually my great uncle – the youngest brother of my mother’s father.  Chuck has enjoyed the pleasure of living his entire life on the farm – and in the same bedroom!  He once had a bumper sticker that said “As a matter of fact, I DO own the road.”  For good reason, he seldom sees the need to venture far off Willard Street Ext. – perhaps for an occasional Red Sox game.
